How to Care for Your Favorite Suit

By Victor R. Santerino

Your suit can't keep itself in good condition. Many people think that we are taking care of our suits if we hang our suits up when we are not wearing them. Many of us purchase a suit for a special, upcoming occasion, and when this is done, we will take the suit to the cleaners if necessary and hang it in our closet.

The next occasion its deemed suitable, it will be taken out, worn, cleaned again if required and hung up in the wardrobe. You can see the pattern already formed. Nothing other than this will happen to your suit and you consider nothing else necessary.

One day, the next time you need the to wear a suit, you take it out of the closet and discover that your major investment, your thousand dollar suit, has been eaten away by moths and is completely destroyed. Now you know that you should have taken better care of it.

It doesn't take too long for moths to destroy an entire suit. To deter them, use cedar, a great moth repellent. There are many products that can be purchased to keep moths away, but the best method is to use a wardrobe made from cedar wood.

Once cleaned, men's suits must be hung so as not to crease in any way. This means having it hang straight, as it would be worn. Keep it out of any sun light. If it's possible for the sun to shine directly into where your suit is stored and it happens as a regular occurance, you will find your suit to have noticably faded in exposed areas.

When you take a trip, put your suit in a travel bag. These nylon bags come equipped with a hanger for your suit and the bag can be zipped up. A high quality travel bag will let you fold your suit carefully and won't leave too many creases. When you arrive at your location, you should straighten out your suit and let it hang in a natural position for as long as you can.

As for cleaning, look around and ask for advice. Pick a dry cleaners that has been in business for a long time. A lot of the newly opened dry cleaners hire young people and don't actually do the cleaning at their own business. They ship all of their clothes away for cleaning. Find a cleaners that cleans at the same place where their business is located.

At the same time, try to find a cleaner who will also carry out suit care alterations if required. Even if it's simply a case of an expanding waistline. None of us stay the same shape forever. - 29871
