Tips For Picking A Sewing Machine

By Bridget Holmes

If you walked into a store right now, could you pick out the best sewing machine for your current needs? If you think a sewing machine is a sewing machine, you have not shopped the wide variety that is currently represented on the market today. The tips to follow should give you a good idea of what is being offered so you can make the best decision possible when it comes to making a purchase.

The first decision you have to make is whether you want a very basic machine or if you want an electronic model that has more of the advanced features the market offers today. Most machines are electronic these days, with manual machines becoming harder and harder to come by.

Whether or not you actually have a real use for many of the advanced features being sold on many units today must always be taken into consideration. If you are purchasing this machine for very basic purposes or if a child will be learning to sew on it, then a simple manual machine may be all you need. On the other hand, sewing enthusiasts may really need something with more creative options.

Today, you can choose from various foot pedals which change the type of stitching the machine will product as well as different sized viewing screens that allow up close views of the sewing process. This eliminates the need to strain to see the tip of the needle, but again, not everyone has a real use for this type of thing.

Some machines will also double as embroidery machines, with some advanced packages coming with hundreds of stitches already preprogrammed into the sewing machine. There are even computerized programs which allow you to hook the machine right up to a computer to transfer patterns and stitching options from the computer right into the machine.

As with any other type of product on the market today, the more of these advanced features on a machine the higher you can expect the price tag to be. There are still some very simple, manual sewing machines which can be purchased for very low prices, but most machines fall in the mid-price range. These machines will offer some of the more basic and commonly requested extra features, without going overboard.

Rather than purchasing a top of the line machine that you will never actually half of the features on, check into each feature on each machine that catches you eye. Ask yourself honestly how many of those features you will make use of on a regular basis.

When you try to select a sewing machine in today's market, you have to take the time to learn what features are available on what models and what the price ranges tend to be. This will allow you to control expense while still getting the best machine for your regular sewing needs. If you aren't familiar with the market you may end up shelling out a high price for more features than you will ever actually use. - 29871
