The Cashmere Punch-Up

By Myer Thompson

We've all heard about the look, feel and fabric of cotton. It's catchy and who doesn't like cotton? It's a win-win situation that doesn't call for us to do much more than check the label and try it on. We can say the same thing about the luxury liner of fabrics, that darling of Darjeeling: cashmere.

Cashmere is a big deal for a good reason. It's one of the most sensuous fabrics on this fair planet. We can make a great case for silk and cotton and even synthetics like Rayon, but they don't quite compare with cashmere. If you have ever had the utter joy of owning and wearing cashmere sweaters, you know what I'm talking about.

You should indeed have a lamb's wool sweater, and maybe even one crafted from an acrylic blend. But your wardrobe hasn't graduated Fashion College until it boasts of having at least two cashmere beauties in it. Lads and little girls like to wear fuzzy sweaters with stripes. Men and women of distinction, on the other hand, know how to match their solid cashmere sweaters with anything on the proverbial rack.

If it looks cheap, it is. Don't bother with cashmere if it's blended or regaled with busy patterns. The beauty of the fabric is its subtly. After all, subtly is the clearest watermark of sophistication. You can write with a clumsy gel pen, but it won't compare to an elegant Cross pen or a Lamy fountain pen. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

Take your wardrobe up a notch with a minimum of two sumptuous cashmere pieces -- read as sweaters -- and begin the process of understanding how texture can transform a tepid sartorial palette into a thing of complicated beauty. If you find sweaters too bothersome or unfashionable (which would be surprising to say the least) you can always incorporate a cashmere scarf or shawl instead. - 29871
